How not to poach an egg

I was feeling a bit adventurous one day, so I decided that it would be the day I’d try poached eggs. Not try eating them — I’ve had them a few times at restaurants, and I really liked them — but cooking them. From what I’ve heard and read, they’re a bit trickier than, say, boiled eggs, so as with any enterprise with the potential for disaster, I took photos.

Egg #1:
First I boiled some water, adding a dash of white vinegar.

Then I cracked an egg into a ramekin which was oven/microwave safe, so I figured it will be ok in boiling water.

After the water boiled, I let it cool down to simmering, then dropped the ramekin containing the egg into the pan.

Apparently my eggs weren’t very fresh, the whites dispersed immediately.

Still, I finished cooking it.

This was the result. Fail. I ate it anyway. It was still a good egg.

As you can see from how runny it is, I fear no salmonella.

Egg #2
So next, I thought I’d try another tactic — plastic wrap! I lined a ramekin with plastic cling-wrap.

Then I cracked an egg into it.

Then I tied the plastic wrap into a pouch with the egg inside, leaving some room for expansion and whatnot, then dropped it in a pan of simmering water.

This was the result. Less of a fail, but fail nevertheless. It was also still good, so I ate it.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ll be going back to boiled egg and oatmeal for breakfast.

Coffee, black

First off, I’m not one of those purists who think that coffee should only be drunk black. The ones who say that if you add milk and/or sugar, it’s no longer coffee. That’s silly. It’s like saying that if you butter your toast, you’re not actually eating bread.

Anyway.

I’ve decided to start weaning myself off sugar and milk in my coffee. Recently, I’ve doubled my daily dosage of coffee. Usually, I have a mug a day. A mug, in my case, is the equivalent of two cups of coffee. So since I’ve doubled it, I’ve been gulping down four cups a day. Depending on which study you look at, I’m either decreasing my risk for heart disease or increasing my risk of getting hallucinations. Maybe both. Anyway, I don’t care, I love my coffee. Read more…

Lunch, and other things I ate today

In lieu of posting anything deeply philosophical, I give you the things I ate today.

Lunch was penne with chicken and tomatoes, one of the few edible entrées I can make on my own.

Leche flan for dessert. I used ramekins this time, instead of the usual tin molds.

We had dinner at Tiendesitas tonight, at Hacienda, this new restaurant M. wanted to try.

It was quaint, with cool old furniture and dishes. There was even a bunch of old LPs on display. Read more…

Party in your mouth

While baking apples still abound in the shelves of TinyMall (TM), I hereby declare that everything I bake will have apples in them:

Apple cookies.

Apple muffins.

Of course you can’t taste them from where you are. Just so you know, they’re like a party in your mouth.
