Party

Pintakasi victory party and The Lam-Ang Experiment sort-of launch

We thought we were in the wrong place. Mike invited us to the launch of a graphic novel he wrote, a re-emagining of the Ilocano epic “Biag ni Lam-Ang”. But when we got to the Collective (Malugay St., Makati City), all we could find was a party for some movie. Obviously, I should learn to look at my e-mail attachments.

The two bouncers at the entrance looked amused at my confusion. Mike had to come by and ask them to let us in.

It was a victory party for Pinta*kasi, the movie that won the New Wave Best Indie Film award at the recent Metro Manila Filmfest. There was supposed to be a launch of sorts for the graphic novel “The Lam-Ang Experiment” which was created by the same company Creative Media. “Lam-Ang” was a pet project of Ilocos governor Imee Marcos.

At some point in the evening, they put up the poster of “Lam-Ang”.

A Manifesto in Support of Choice

“Excommunicate Me!”
26 November 2010
Café Adarna
Kalayaan Ave., Quezon City

Tonight, we advocates of social justice and free and informed choice, come together in an expression of solidarity towards the passage of the Reproductive Health Bill.

Whereas the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines has repeatedly imposed its agenda upon the government, in clear violation of the principle of the separation of Church and State;

RH BILL ADVOCATES CHALLENGE THE CBCP IN EXCOMMUNICATION PARTY
“If supporting the RH Bill means excommunication, then excommunicate me!”

Quezon City (11/26/10) – Over 100 Reproductive Health (RH) advocates are attending an excommunication party to express their support for the RH Bill and dissent against the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP). Expected attendees are RH Bill advocates from different sectors, including legislators, activists, women’s groups, professionals, and students. The advocates will sign a document that poses a challenge to the CBCP: “If supporting the RH Bill means excommunication, then excommunicate me!”

Copies of the document will be sent to each participant’s parish church. The original document will be delivered to the CBCP. Aside from signing the excommunication document, pro-RH legislators and advocates will deliver solidarity messages throughout the evening. “Pro-RH lawmakers continue to support the RH Bill even at the risk of excommunication,” said Sylvia Estrada-Claudio of the Filipino Freethinkers, lead organizers of the event. “They are not afraid of the CBCP. Neither are we.”

The excommunication party is the next chapter of the conflict between pro-RH Bill advocates (many of whom are Catholic laity), and anti-RH Bill advocates (led by the CBCP and Pro-Life Philippines). In a recent incident at the Manila Cathedral, anti-RH advocates led by Eric Manalang of Pro-Life blockaded and kicked out from a mass and prayer service members of the Filipino Freethinkers and Democratic Socialist Women of the Philippines when they attempted to attend a mass wearing Damaso T-shirts, an expression of their support for the RH Bill.

“For supporting the RH Bill, Manalang called even the devout Roman Catholics amoung us Satan,” said Red Tani, President of the Filipino Freethinkers. “He branded the Catholics among us oxymorons, as if it were a contradiction to be pro-RH and remain Catholic. We were told that our mothers should have aborted us. If the church hierarchy thinks supporting the RH bill means heresy, then by all means — excommunicate us! We’re throwing an advanced party for the ceremony,” said Mr. Tani.

Hosted by the Filipino Freethinkers, the excommunication party will be held at Adarna Food and Culture Restaurant. “This will be a night of dinner, entertainment, and dissent,” said Mr. Tani. As Adarna serves good food, improv comedians treat guests to creative, interactive comedy. There will also be adult party games with prizes courtesy of SexandSensibilities.com and the event’s various sponsors.

“As far as we know, this excommunication party is the first event of its kind,” said  Mr. Tani. “And until the CBCP stops blocking the RH Bill from passing, this will definitely not be the last.”

Partying at Etude House

So last Thursday night, a few friends and I attended Etude House’s Grand Launch party. As you may know, I’m a huge fan of this Korean make-up/skin care brand. Its products are packaged in cute designs, work really well, and are nicely priced. Also, Etude House shops have pink interiors that remind one of a little girl’s dream bedroom, which is probably why I like going there. It doesn’t hurt that its image model is Park Shin Hye (of the drama “He’s Beautiful”) whom I adore.

The invitation (sent out to Pink Membership Card holders) said attire was pink and white. Not my usual style, but I managed to sneak in a little pink.

Etude House Launch Party - 7 October 2010The party was held at Republiq at Resort World Manila, which I’ve never been to because it’s quite far from home. They had canapes (I tried one but didn’t like it, though) and pomelo vodka (yummy). Video screens showed various Etude House CFs featuring image models Park Shin Hye and Lee Min Ho (“Boys over Flowers”). The show was hosted by Tim Yap, and featured models in various make-up lines such as LUCIDarling (I have the Fantastic BB Sponge Cake — the only face powder/foundation they have that works for my non-lilly white complexion), Golden Ratio (It’s new! Never tried it yet.) and Code B (I swear by its Strong Eyes cream liner, and I also use the mascara). We got a kick out of the fact that they used 2NE1′s “Go Away” during the show — I love that song. If you were wondering who was the crazy person yelling “Where is the 2NE1 make-up line?!? I waited all summer!” while the models were catwalking around — that was me.

They also showed video messages from Lee Min Ho and Park Shin Hye, both apologizing for not being able to be there for the party, but saying they hoped to visit Manila soon. (Oh dear lord, I’m SO there when that happens.)

They were doing free make-overs, but we were too busy getting our photos taken with the Lee Min Ho standees. No Park Shin Hye standee, though, which was disappointing. I guess they figured they had more female customers and they’d prefer Lee Min Ho. (So not true! We like them both.) There were also some Korean models there to pose for photos with, and you could have a polaroid photo taken of you (for free) against one of the Etude House backdrops (mine turned out, uh, sunburnt).

I was disappointed that they only gave out one goody bag per invitation, so my plus one and I had to share the loot. She got the Precious Mineral BB Compact and Precious Mineral BB Cream, I got the Aqua Cure and Minisize U (pore control) trial/travel kits, and the pen. Neither of us wanted the O2 White toner and emulsion samples, as neither of us were interested in, uh, whitening, so I ended up taking those home.

(The Precious Mineral BB Compact and Cream in photo are the ones I already had because, like I mentioned, the ones from the goody bag went to my plus one. If I have the time, I’ll post reviews of the free stuff I got.)

All in all, we had a fun evening. Which was great because my week was getting a bit toxic, and it was good to de-stress a bit with friends and free vodka.

Etude House has branches all over Metro Manila, such as MegaMall and Festival Mall. You may visit their website and their Facebook page, and follow them on Twitter.
