The essays in After the Storm were mostly written in the midst of and immediately after the recent typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng. The writers share their experiences of the typhoons, their insights and reflections, their hopes and aspirations. Long after the news media has moved on to the next big headline, After the Storm hopes to stand as a written record to remind everyone that this happened. We were there. We are still here.

Allowing myself a little hope

On July 2, 2010 / By tania / In Event, Politics, Society / No Comments
Let's face it, we Pinoys have been burned a lot of times. Presidents make a lot of promises, but things just get worse and worse. The presidential hopefuls I like never actually get there, and right now I'm seriously considering looking for a new country.

The Taxi Diaries: Mail order bride edition

On January 23, 2010 / By tania / In Cabs, Society, Women / No Comments
"You know, you look like my foreign friend's ex-girlfriend," cabbie said.

I don't usually like talking to the cab driver, because I'm afraid the topic would turn to either religion or politics, and, well, those two topics tend to get people all fired up and one must never fight with the guy in the driver's seat. So what I do is, I just respond to whatever the cabbie says and try to be non-committal and not volunteer anything.

"Oh," I said.

"He's Dutch, and he's here two months out of the year. They had an apartment here, and when he's abroad he sends her something like $700 a month. One day he comes back and she'd left, taking all the stuff with her."

"That's too bad."

"I'm not saying you're her, of course." Read from The Entropy Blog

C.O.L. redux

On January 18, 2010 / By tania / In God-free, Living, Society / No Comments
So, you remember that old lady who creeps me out because she sits outside her apartment and tells everyone who passes by "God bless"? Well, she's now out in the hallway yelling at someone and calling this person's mother a whore and all sorts of nasty stuff.

God bless, creepy old lady.

Crime! Cops! Groceries!

On January 9, 2010 / By tania / In Cabs, Living, Society, Stuff / No Comments
So the other day, I was loaded with groceries, in a cab heading home. Along Pioneer, the idiot cab driver decides to make an illegal U-turn to avoid the sea of traffic. Unfortunately there were cops there. Lots of them. When asked for an ID, he gave them what apparently turned out to be a fake PNP ID.

"Are you a police officer?" one cop asked him. Cabbie tries to evade the question. "So you're NOT a cop then?" the officer pressed him.
